South Africa Air Freight Market Analysis
The size of South Africa's Air Freight Market is USD 350 million in the current year and is anticipated to register a CAGR of more than 3% during the forecast period. Air cargo service providers are facing new difficulties as a result of the rising demand for air freight transportation services. To offer services at a reasonable price, airlines must concentrate on implementing fuel-efficient solutions and incorporating cutting-edge technologies.
- The continent with the fewest annual air travellers in Africa. It accounts for only 2% of all transportation worldwide, including passengers and freight. Africa had one billion people in 2010; by 2050, it will have more than two billion.
- The 230 airlines operating in Africa only use about 5% of the world's commercial passenger and cargo aircraft, despite the continent having 15% of the world's population. The average age of the African airline fleet is the highest of any continent (17 years, as opposed to the global average of 12 years).
- Air travel seems to be the greatest alternative for freight, commerce, and tourism given the significant distances between African nations and cities as well as the sparse and frequently decrepit road and rail infrastructure.
- In Africa, foreign tourism is the main factor influencing air travel. With more than 25 million people carried annually, South Africa is the world leader in air passenger traffic. Egypt, Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Nigeria, Kenya, Ethiopia, Tanzania, and Mauritius round out the top ten. Tourism is the primary driver of air travel to and from Africa, and as Morocco, Egypt, South Africa, and Tunisia are some of the most well-liked tourist destinations on the continent, it is not unexpected to see these nations ranked among the top nations with the most passengers.
- On commercial flights, a lot of airlines offer cargo space for sale. The reason for the current low volume of aviation freight is that cargo aircraft have not historically received high attention in Africa. Ethiopian Airlines is the only airline succeeding in this market, nevertheless. In terms of freight, it is the top airline in Africa. Ethiopian Airlines imports USD 5 times as much (USD16 billion) as it exports, which is primarily flowers and amounts to USD 3 billion annually. The majority of the items imported into Africa via air freight include manufactured goods, parts, electronics, pharmaceuticals, and food.
- Fruits and vegetables, seafood, and flowers make up the great majority of the goods exported from Africa via airfreight. Perishable and fresh goods make up two-thirds of the aviation cargo that travels from Africa to the northern hemisphere.
South Africa Air Freight Market Trends
E-commerce Expansion Possibilities for Growth in the Air Freight Sector
After the pandemic, online retail and e-commerce increased by 20% yearly. Consumers' use of Internet purchasing increased significantly, according to retailers. To compete with online merchants, traditional brick-and-mortar establishments sought omnichannel opportunities. Between April and June 2020, clothing retailers in South Africa experienced a massive increase in online sales. Another South African internet business, OneDayOnly, experienced 40% growth within the same time period, and this success story is comparable.
According to the "2022 South African Digital Customer Experience Report," 10% of all online purchases are made directly through social media sites like Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp.
As businesses experience increased traffic to their websites and applications (apps), they must ensure convenience for users of their e-commerce platforms.
Growing Demand for the Air Freight Market
With IATA data showing strong and stable performance in June, the air freight business is expected to continue its upward trend in 2022. 2.2% more air freight was demanded in the first half of 2022 compared to the first half of 2019 before COVID. That's an impressive achievement, especially in light of the ongoing supply chain limitations and the capacity loss caused by the conflict in Ukraine. The demand for air cargo has not been significantly impacted by the current economic uncertainty, but in the second half, events will need to be carefully watched.
African airlines saw cargo volumes increase by 5.7% in June 2022 compared to June 2021. As with carriers in Latin America, airlines in this region have shown optimism by introducing additional capacity. Capacity was 10.3% above June 2021 levels. Demand for the first half-year was 2.9% above 2021 levels and half-year capacity was 6.9% above 2021 levels.

South Africa Air Freight Market News
- March 2023: As importers and exporters look to falling sea freight rates and improved ocean reliability, South Africa is about to transition away from air freight. At the Air Cargo Africa conference last week in Johannesburg, attendees learned that the air will be used less and less by the automotive industry.
- February 2023: South Africa now has its own cargo airline thanks to the founding of Suid Cargo, a company situated at OR Tambo Airport in Johannesburg. The airline, which was revealed last week at the Air Cargo Africa conference in Johannesburg, has already been granted an air operator's certificate (AOC) and will begin flying in the second quarter of this year using a rented Astral Aviation 727-200. Astral owns 25% of Suid Cargo but could not acquire a more significant stake due to South Africa's restrictions on foreign ownership. Investors in the area provide the remaining 75% of the funding.
